Cluster Headache – Magnesium Supplements To Cure Your Pain
The Department of Neurology from the State University of New York has examined the possibility that patients with cluster headaches and low ionized magnesium levels may respond to an intravenous infusion of magnesium sulfate. They tested 22 patients with cluster headaches through 38 infusions of magnesium sulfate.
This test confirmed that magnesium can be used as a treatment for cluster headaches, although in some cases a placebo effect can’t be completely ruled out. If you don’t want to get intravenous infusions of magnesium sulfate, you can start with taking magnesium supplements. And you don’t have to wait until your next cluster headache cycle starts, you can start any day. Take one supplement every morning (talk to your doctor before starting this) during your active and non-active periods. I have heard of different cluster headache sufferers that found relief in this treatment. In most cases the number of attacks will decrease and in some cases the cluster headaches will stop all together.
In some cases you can increase your magnesium levels by simply adjusting your diet. If you plan foods in your menu that have high magnesium levels, it might be possible to get your levels high enough so you don’t need to take supplements, but it can be a tad difficult to rely on your diet only.
I have written an article on the relationship between magnesium and cluster headaches before. You can find it here. And before starting this, you should talk to the person that knows your medical history the best: your doctor. Keep him informed about your intention that you are going to take magnesium supplements. If you are taking medication on a regular basis, it can be important that he has this information.
