The Department of Neurology from the State University of New York has examined the possibility that patients with cluster headaches and low ionized magnesium levels may respond to an intravenous infusion of magnesium sulfate.  They tested 22 patients with cluster headaches through 38 infusions of magnesium sulfate.

Cluster headaches are nothing like ordinary, run of the mill headaches, as anyone who has ever suffered one can tell you. They are far more painful than the regular variety. Believe it or not, they’re even worse than migraine headaches. The pain of a cluster headache is so intense that most people describe it as unbearable, and when one comes on there is no way for the person to function, unlike a low grade garden variety headache, which can usually be managed. Headaches are very common in our life.  Stress, hormones and anxiety can trigger a headache without to much trouble.  But not all headaches are that common or normal.  One type of headache is very rare and very painful: cluster headache.  Cluster headaches start suddenly and doesn’t give any previous warning or symptoms.  The pain generated with a cluster headache attack will start, usually, behind one of your eyes, but rapidly the whole side of your face will become red and swollen.

For instance, although approximately one person out of every ten of the population suffers from migraine headaches, only about one person in three hundred will experience a cluster headache.

Thursday morning 4.20 am, my husband wakes up with a terrible headache attack. It’s there, we have been waiting on it since December (as he normally has an active period then), but now in April it’s finally there. Luckily we know what to do and we work like an olied machine. He goes somewhere where it’s really dark while I put everything ready he needs. A bucket for when his stomach starts getting upset and a bottle of water to start his water treatment. It worked the last time to reduce the number of attacks so we start again this time. When the attack is finished he calls his job as he won’t be working today, the first few days he always feels terrible so he won’t be working for the rest of the week.

When I was looking into new possible treatments for cluster headaches, I found this article, publiced in January.  It talks about a new possible treatment for cluster headaches.  In short it treats the condition by blocking the cluster headache triggers.  Maybe it can be helpful for you, talk to your doctor about it.  I gave a copy to my husband, so he can take it to his doctor too.

Many people are just beginning to hear about the extremely painful phenomenon known as cluster headaches. But most of them have no idea what it’s like to go through a cluster headache attack. For the average person, it’s just an intellectual awareness. They tend to think that these are just like regular headaches, only a bit more painful, sort of like migraines. People who suffer from cluster headaches more often than not will confuse them with a migraine. The pain of a cluster headache can be so intense that it is beyond that of a regular migraine however. Doctors do not class cluster headaches as the same thing as migraines even if some of the symptoms do overlap. There are some similarities between the two but there are also some clear differences.

I hate to break it to you, but there are no outright cures for cluster headaches. However, there are many ways that people are using to successfully ward off and minimize the severity of their cluster headaches. Because there is no one cause for the onset of cluster headaches, a broad and ‘one size fits all’ cure is unable to be attained – every sufferer gets the headaches in different circumstances.

Hi,

As you can see on this site, cluster headache is one of the most severe headaches someone can suffer from. My husband, for example, has this desease for almost 10 years. Two times every year, for 6 to 8 weeks, he will wake up at night, screaming from all the pain he has. And those attacks will repeat themselves during the day. In the peek of the cluster period he will have up to 5 attacks a day, and while they are happening the only thing I can do is assure him that it will pass, ’cause that’s the only thing that will keep him sane.
